As a part of our editorial theme on suboptimal management of comorbidities and infections in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), we are pleased to present a recorded discussion with our Lupus Hub Steering Committee members. The topic of discussion was key considerations in managing comorbidities and infections in patients with SLE and the session was chaired by Ricard Cervera. Other featured members include Betty Diamond, Murray Urowitz, Manuel Francisco Ugarte-Gil, and James Cheng-Chung Wei.
What are the key considerations when managing comorbidities and infections in patients with SLE?
Cervera opens by discussing the recent 2023 updates of EULAR recommendations for the management of SLE, previously featured on the Lupus Hub. The members discussed the feasibility of implementing these recommendations globally. Urowitz highlights the importance of early recognition of subclinical forms of comorbidities, a topic he previously explored in his expert opinion interview, emphasizing the need for early investigation and treatment; Wei emphasizes osteoporosis, postmenopausal syndrome, and psychosocial aspects. The discussions also explored the strategies for mitigating immunosuppression through vaccinations, including COVID-19, herpes zoster, pneumococcal, and respiratory syncytial virus.
